As you may have read in a recent PneumoALERT, new data on the global, regional and country-level burdens of pneumococcal and Hib diseases were released in The Lancet earlier this month. We hope that this data will not only document the staggering toll of these diseases, particularly in Asia and Africa, but will also provide key decision-making information for countries considering introducing new vaccines.

We look forward to seeing you in a few days at ISPPD-6, Reykjavik, Iceland. I’d like to bring your attention to a special session that PneumoADIP will be co-sponsoring along with PACE, the Sabin Vaccine Institute and PATH. For the first time at ISPPD, an advocacy session will focus on efforts to translate science into evidence-based policy.

PneumoALERT - 1 June 2008
The 6th International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD-6) was held this year from June 8-12 in Reykjavik, Iceland. The island’s beautiful landscape and friendly local hosts welcomed the world’s leading experts in the field, with a total of 37 invited speakers, 43 oral presentations, 500 posters, and 980 participants from 86 countries, and all continents.

PneumoAlert - 1 May 2008
This month’s WHO Bulletin, led by the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP), focuses on the prevention and control of childhood pneumonia. It highlights research on the many aspects that drive this deadly disease and the progress now being made – progress that is a priority if Millennium Development Goal 4 to reduce child mortality is to be achieved.
